Bridging Heritage and Daily Life Through the Art of Brush and Ink
Strategically conceptualized by the Baiyi International Culture & Sports Exchange Association and co-organized with the Culture, Sports, Tourism, Education and Technology Association (CSTET), the Fai Chun Calligraphy Competition was recently concluded with great success. Centered on the traditional practice of Fai Chun writing, the event wove together festive spirit and public participation, enabling the traditional art of calligraphy to be rediscovered and experienced within contemporary living contexts.
Fai Chun, as a longstanding Chinese New Year tradition, is far more than seasonal decoration. It embodies a collective memory rooted in calligraphic artistry, linguistic expression, and intergenerational blessings. During the competition, participants translated their hopes and well-wishes for the new year into brushstrokes and written characters—transforming cultural elements once confined to books and exhibitions into a tangible, participatory, and lived experience.
The atmosphere was both warm and focused. Participants of different generations engaged in spontaneous exchanges about character structure, brush techniques, and symbolic meanings. In doing so, calligraphy evolved from a culture "to be observed" into an intangible cultural expression that can be learned, shared, and passed on. This interactive process represents a vital pathway for the continuity of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the modern era.
As the lead organizing body, the Baiyi International Culture & Sports Exchange Association anchored the event in the broader framework of cultural exchange and heritage transmission. Through thoughtful activity design and sequencing, the Association guided participants toward a deeper understanding of the cultural significance behind Fai Chun, while presenting traditional art in a manner more closely aligned with everyday life.
The Culture, Sports, Tourism, Education and Technology Association (CSTET) served in the role of on-site coordination and operational support, working in alignment with the lead organizer’s overall plan to ensure the smooth execution of the event. With its long-standing focus on moving culture from display to participation and from form to understanding, CSTTET provided practical support and on-the-ground coordination, allowing cultural activities to unfold naturally within public space.
Together, the organizing and supporting bodies embodied the principle of living heritage—not as static preservation, but as a dynamic process where culture is used, understood, and continuously renewed through writing, interaction, and shared participation.
Looking ahead, the organizing partners will continue to explore new ways of presenting intangible cultural heritage in contemporary society through a diverse range of cultural activities—ensuring that traditional culture does not remain confined to history and memory, but genuinely enters the daily lives of generations to come.
